Electric vehicles are gaining popularity around Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and eco-conscious drivers are excited to make the switch. If you are also thinking about EV ownership, you may have questions about the steps you need to take to prepare your home for an electric vehicle. That’s ok! The automotive experts at BMW of Pembroke Pines have created a guide on how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle, including the installation of an electric vehicle charging station.

1. Choose Your Prefered Method of Charging

The first step in getting your home ready for EV ownership is choosing a method of charging. Home electric vehicle charging stations generally fall into two categories:

  • Level 1 EV charging – This method of charging may take 24 hours or more to fully charge an electric vehicle.
  • Level 2 EV charging – This type of electric vehicle charging station can charge an EV fully in just a few hours. However, it will need to be installed by an electrician.

2. Set Up Your Garage

Has your Hollywood garage accumulated a lot of clutter recently? Now is the time to get organized! You need to make sure there is enough space for the electric vehicle charging station of your choice.

3. Locate the Power Panel and Assess Consumption

The power panel in your home is responsible for distributing electricity across the entire building, and it will be rated for a maximum amount of current flow measured in Amperes. Newer homes will likely have a 100 Amp power panel. If you are not sure about the maximum amount of current flow for your home, you can check the amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker. Then, perform a self-assessment of your electricity use before the installation of an electric vehicle charging station. You do not want to overload the electric distribution panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

If you are looking to install a Level 2 electric vehicle charging station, it will need to be installed by an electrician. While this is generally pretty affordable, it could get a bit more costly if your power panel is not sufficient and needs to be upgraded.

5. Have the Charger of Your Choice Installed Professionally

If you have selected an electric vehicle charging station, contact your electrician to have it properly installed. If not, research your options and find one that works best for your needs and budget.
